Task-based "jobs" — liking videos, rating hotels, completing "prepaid tasks" for commission — have become one of India’s biggest online scams, hitting students and job-seekers hardest. Here is how to recognise them.

How the scam unfolds

  • You get a WhatsApp/Telegram message offering easy daily earnings.
  • The first tiny "task" actually pays you a small amount — to build trust.
  • Then you’re moved to a group and asked to "invest" in bigger "prepaid tasks" to unlock higher commissions.
  • Once you put in real money, withdrawals are blocked with endless "fees" and "taxes".

Red flags

  • Unsolicited job offers with no interview and unrealistic pay.
  • Any "job" that asks YOU to pay money, deposit, or buy tasks.
  • Pressure, countdowns, and Telegram groups full of fake "success" screenshots.
  • Payments routed to personal UPI IDs, not a registered company.

Protect yourself

  • A real job never asks you to pay to work.
  • Verify the company independently; check for a real website and registration.
  • Warn students and family — this scam spreads through referrals.

FAQ

Are "task" and "like & earn" jobs real?

Almost never. Legitimate employers don’t pay you to like videos or ask you to deposit money to earn.

I already invested. Can I recover it?

Report immediately to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in with all chats and transaction IDs. Fast reporting improves recovery odds.

How do I check if a job offer is genuine?

Look for a real company, a proper interview, an offer letter, and no request for any payment from you.
