Short answer: yes, if you will actually practise, and no if you are looking for a certificate to hang on a wall. Cyber security is one of the few technical fields where a disciplined 18-year-old with a lab can out-interview a graduate without one. This article is written for students in Kolkata and, honestly, for their parents.
Do you need an engineering degree first?
Not for SOC, VAPT or security-analyst roles, which is where nearly all first jobs are. Employers ask what you can do and how you document it. A degree matters for research posts, some government positions, and for families who want the qualification as a fallback — all legitimate reasons, but they are separate from employability in security.
The realistic plan after 12th
- Option A — course alongside a degree. Enrol in a BCA or B.Tech and do the security course in parallel. By final year you have both the degree and a portfolio, and you interview far above your peers. This is what we recommend for most students.
- Option B — course first, degree later. Sensible if finances are tight or you want to earn early. Get to a first SOC role, then take a distance or evening degree while employed.
- Option C — degree only. Fine, but understand that a degree alone rarely produces a security job offer. The lab work has to happen somewhere.
What it costs and what it pays
The cyber security course is ₹15,000 for 3–4 months and the CEH-aligned ethical hacking course ₹60,000 for 6 months, both with EMI. On the other side: Entry-level SOC and IT-security pay in Kolkata generally trails Bengaluru and Pune for the same job title. The lift usually comes from certification, a demonstrable lab portfolio, and moving to remote or relocated roles after the first couple of years.
What Kolkata specifically offers a 12th-pass student
Security hiring concentrates in the Sector V, New Town and Rajarhat delivery centres — SOC L1 and L2 monitoring, identity and access administration, vulnerability management, GRC and audit support for overseas clients — plus bank and NBFC operations teams. Kolkata carries fewer product-security and red-team roles than Bengaluru or Hyderabad, so remote contracts and relocation are realistic parts of the plan.
Where Kolkata students are coming from
If you are in 12th now, the colleges and campuses around you matter less than you think for security specifically — but they do shape who you will be competing against. The institutions named across Kolkata's areas include Webel Bhavan (SALTLEC), TCS and Cognizant delivery centres, Techno Main Salt Lake, TCS Gitanjali Park, Infosys Kolkata development centre, Aliah University New Town campus, DLF IT Park, Unitech Infospace, Multi-tenant BPO and KPO floors, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous). Graduates from these places will be in your interview shortlist, and most of them will arrive with a degree and no lab portfolio. That gap is your opening.
Esplanade. Bank operations staff, junior government IT personnel and law students moving toward cyber-law and forensics work.
Tollygunge. Media and post-production professionals plus local college students wanting a technical, non-media career line.
Sodepur. Engineering and degree students who cannot spend commute hours on classroom coaching and need evening online batches.
The honest warnings
Two things get sold hard to school leavers and both deserve suspicion. The first is "100% placement guarantee" — that is marketing language, not a contract; ask what it means in writing. The second is any course promising you will become a hacker in weeks. Six months of lab practice is the realistic figure, and anyone shortening it is shortening your skills, not the timeline.
Starting from anywhere in Kolkata
Classes are live online with morning, evening and weekend batches, so school and college timetables are workable. Students join from Howrah, Jadavpur, Gariahat, Sodepur, Shyambazar, EM Bypass and the rest of the city.
FAQ
Can I do a cyber security course after 12th in Kolkata?
Yes. No programming or IT background is required — the course begins with networking and Linux fundamentals. Students join straight after 12th, during BCA or B.Tech, and as working professionals. What matters is time on the lab, not your stream.
Should I do the course instead of a degree?
Usually alongside, not instead. Doing a BCA or B.Tech with the security course in parallel means you finish with both a qualification and a lab portfolio, which is the strongest position for a first job. Course-first is reasonable if finances or timing demand it.
Which stream in 12th is required?
Any. Science with maths helps slightly with networking concepts, but commerce and arts students complete the course routinely. The prerequisites are curiosity and consistent practice.
12th ke baad cyber security course sahi hai kya?
Haan, agar aap regular practice karoge. Degree ke saath-saath course karna sabse achha rehta hai — final year tak degree bhi hoti hai aur lab portfolio bhi, jisse interview me bada farq padta hai. Course ₹15,000 se shuru hota hai, EMI available hai.
