Short answer: yes, if you will actually practise, and no if you are looking for a certificate to hang on a wall. Cyber security is one of the few technical fields where a disciplined 18-year-old with a lab can out-interview a graduate without one. Do you need an engineering degree first?
Not for SOC, VAPT or security-analyst roles, which is where nearly all first jobs are. Employers ask what you can do and how you document it. A degree matters for research posts, some government positions, and for families who want the qualification as a fallback — all legitimate reasons, but they are separate from employability in security.
The realistic plan after 12th
- Option A — course alongside a degree. Enrol in a BCA or B.Tech and do the security course in parallel. By final year you have both the degree and a portfolio, and you interview far above your peers. This is what we recommend for most students.
- Option B — course first, degree later. Sensible if finances are tight or you want to earn early. Get to a first SOC role, then take a distance or evening degree while employed.
- Option C — degree only. Fine, but understand that a degree alone rarely produces a security job offer. The lab work has to happen somewhere.
What it costs and what it pays
The cyber security course is ₹15,000 for 3–4 months and the CEH-aligned ethical hacking course ₹60,000 for 6 months, both with EMI. On the other side: Entry roles in Delhi NCR typically start at ₹4–8 LPA for a SOC Analyst and ₹6–12 LPA for a VAPT Engineer, with application security engineers at product companies reaching ₹8–16 LPA.
What Delhi specifically offers a 12th-pass student
Delhi NCR is India’s second-largest security hiring market after Bengaluru, with employers concentrated in Gurugram, Noida, Okhla, Nehru Place and Jasola — banks and BFSI back-offices, managed security providers, consultancies and product startups.
Where Delhi students are coming from
If you are in 12th now, the colleges and campuses around you matter less than you think for security specifically — but they do shape who you will be competing against. The institutions named across Delhi's areas include Delhi University North Campus (30 min), Corporate training centres on Barakhamba Road, YMCA IMSIT, Old Rajinder Nagar UPSC coaching belt, IP University affiliated colleges, Delhi Institute of Computer Science, Ramjas / Hindu College (North Campus, 20 min), Private IT training centres on Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, Delhi College of Arts & Commerce, Kirori Mal College (North Campus). Graduates from these places will be in your interview shortlist, and most of them will arrive with a degree and no lab portfolio. That gap is your opening.
Daryaganj. Undergraduates from Zakir Husain and AUD, plus junior staff in legal and publishing offices, take beginner-to-CEH tracks that start from networking basics.
GTB Nagar. BSc/BCom students and first-job IT support staff enrol for ethical hacking basics before attempting CEH.
Burari. Affordability-focused learners — BCA students and BPO employees — who want a job-oriented cyber security course they can pay for in instalments.
The honest warnings
Two things get sold hard to school leavers and both deserve suspicion. The first is "100% placement guarantee" — that is marketing language, not a contract; ask what it means in writing. The second is any course promising you will become a hacker in weeks. Six months of lab practice is the realistic figure, and anyone shortening it is shortening your skills, not the timeline.
